The Good Funeral Awards

Sarah and I had a very exciting weekend. We drove off to Winchester to look around the Ideal Death Show which was full of interesting new initiatives including a website which will allow you to cost compare funeral services before you get in touch with anyone.  More news on this when it goes live to the public.   We also saw some beautiful cards for people to send when someone has been bereaved and met a lot of people very passionate about making a difference to people’s experience when someone dies.    We met coffin makers who make  lovely simple wooden coffins and like to know the name of the person they are making for and a little about them so they can think about them while they are making the coffin.  We even saw a yellow taxi hearse.

In the evening we got on our gladrags and went to the Good Funeral Awards Gala Dinner.  We had been nominated as Cemetery of the Year and so had Andy as Gravedigger of the year. To our delight and amazement we won despite a strong field of contenders and so did Andy.  Andy is delighted because he says he has never won anything before and we think he richly deserves it for the flexible and caring way in which he works with each of our families and their very different needs.  We feel very honoured to have our work recognised in this way and grateful to all those who are connected to Westmill.  Everyone we have been in contact with has contributed to this success in their own way.
